How To Turn Off Firestick or Fire TV or Send to Sleep Mode

The Amazon Fire Stick has become a popular streaming device for many users. It offers a simple design that is easy to set up and take on the go. Learning the ins and outs of all the functions can be a little tricky. There are also different ways to operate each Fire TV Stick depending on the version you own.

In this guide, we’ll quickly take you through all options for turning your device off.

HOW TO TURN OFF FIRE STICK WITH A REMOTE:

To turn off your Amazon Fire Stick start by grabbing the included remote. You’ll notice a home button basically right in the middle of the remote. This is the button that needs to be pressed and will access the home menu. Make sure to keep the button held down for a few seconds to prompt the device to bring up the home menu.

You should now see a few options to pick from. Using the remote, make sure you select the “sleep” icon that shows a picture of a moon. This puts your device into a low power mode that is essentially off. If you want, you can completely turn off the device. This requires you to unplug the FireStick from your TV, and disconnect any power cords.

Also, the newest versions of the FireStick remote have an included power button. You’ll find it on the upper left side of the remote. Just press that to turn off the Fire Stick without having to navigate the home menu.

TURN OFF FIRE STICK WITH YOUR PHONE APP:

Even if you can’t find your Fire TV Stick remote, no worries. You can actually use your phone to turn off the device.

First, you’ll need to have the Amazon Fire TV app already downloaded. Once you have done this, open the app and connect to whatever device you want to control.

Second, you should notice a few icons towards the bottom of the screen. One of them is labeled remote. Select this icon to switch over to remote mode.

Finally, you’ll see a similar layout on-screen to your Amazon Fire TV Stick remote. To access what you need, select the small image of a gear towards the top of the screen. In this case, you do not need to press the home button as you would with the standard remote. You should get an option that says “sleep” with a moon icon. Just press that, and you’re good to go.

                           

TURN OFF FIRE STICK WITH YOUR VOICE:

Some versions of the remote will have an included microphone button. You can press the button to input a variety of commands with your voice. This includes searching, starting apps, returning to the home screen, and other basic TV remote functions.

If you have a Fire TV Edition television you also have the option to turn off the device. Simply press the microphone button, and say the command “Alexa, turn off Fire TV.” Unfortunately, there is no voice prompt for the standard Fire Stick to turn off the device.

HOW TO TURN OFF SLEEP MODE ON YOUR FIRE STICK:

Turning off sleep mode is very simple. Anytime you turn off the device using the methods already described, it goes into sleep mode. To turn it back on, all you have to do is press any button on the remote. It will automatically activate the device. The same works on the Amazon Fire TV app. Pressing anything on the app will turn on the Fire TV Stick if you are connected.

WHAT DOES SLEEP MODE DO?

One of the design advantages of the Fire Stick is its minimal use of power. You never really need to completely unplug the device, unless you want to. Or in the case that you decided you won’t use it for a long time, it would be alright to completely unplug it.

Even if you forget to activate sleep mode, the device automatically powers down after 30 minutes. Or in the case of newer models, just 20 minutes. But what exactly happens in sleep mode?

Sleep Mode simply means the FireStick has shut down the TV and most of its function. The only thing it will do is process any software updates. The advantage of sleep mode is that the device can perform these updates much faster than when it is left on.

Again, very little power is being used in sleep mode by the firestick. Even for the environmentally conscious user, don’t be afraid to keep the device in sleep mode. It doesn’t really impact your carbon footprint.

TROUBLE SHOOTING TURNING OFF YOUR FIRE STICK:

Sometimes technology doesn’t work the way we need it to. More often than not as luck would seem to have it. If your FireStick won’t turn off, there are a few tricks you can try.

First, the easiest thing you can do is reboot the whole system. It’s a bit cliché, but “have you tried turning it on and off again,” sometimes is the best advice. To restart the device, open up the home menu. Select the settings icon, and then choose restart.

You can also use two other shortcuts depending on your device. Trying pressing the select button (in the center of the ring) and play button (below home button) at the same time. Hold them together for a few seconds. It should automatically prompt a reset. Or you can always do the old fashion method. Unplug the power directly from the Fire Stick, wait a bit, and plug it back in.

Finally, as a last resort, you can reset the whole device. This will erase all your information! Only select this from the settings menu if nothing else helps.

HOW TO TURN ON FIRESTICK

So, obviously I didn’t make this post about how to turn your Firestick on, but I’ll add this in here just in case. If you want to know how to turn on a firestick then I’ll tell you. It’s pretty simple actually… you don’t. The firestick itself is meant to be an “always-on device”. You can however put your Amazon Fire to sleep as I mentioned in a previous section.

The newer versions of the firestick actually have a power button on the remote. But that power button is because the Amazon fire tv stick can now be paired with your TV. This will also you to turn the volume up and down right from the fire tv remote.

HOW TO RESTART FIRESTICK

Restarting your firestick is as simple as pressing a couple of buttons on Amazon Fire TV Stick remote. Select the middle button (or center button) and press the play/pause button, at the same time, for about 10 seconds on your Amazon fire tv remote. You should then see your device restart. That is the easiest way to restart your Amazon Fire TV stick.

WHAT IF MY FIRESTICK WON’T TURN ON?

From time to time you may have an error that occurs within the Firestick where it won’t turn on normally. The fix for this is fairly simple.

Essentially you will just need to hold down the power button on your Amazon firestick remote for 30 seconds while the TV is unplugged from the wall. Once 30 seconds has passed then you can plug the TV back in and turn it on. Then you just go to the correct fire stick input channel and it should be working just fine.
